The Silent Threat of Kidney Disease
The kidneys filter approximately 200 litres of blood daily. Despite this vital role, chronic kidney disease (CKD) typically has no pain and minimal symptoms until 60–70% of kidney function has already been lost. India has one of the highest burdens of CKD globally, with diabetes and hypertension as the leading causes.
Early Warning Signs
Changes in Urination
- Foamy or frothy urine — protein leaking into the urine (proteinuria)
- Reduced urine output despite normal fluid intake
- Increased frequency, especially at night
- Blood in urine — never ignore this
Swelling (Oedema)
Puffy ankles, swollen feet, or puffiness around the eyes indicate the kidneys are not removing fluid effectively.
Fatigue and Weakness
Failing kidneys do not produce enough erythropoietin. The resulting anaemia causes persistent tiredness and breathlessness even with mild activity.
High Blood Pressure
Hypertension that is difficult to control — especially in a younger person — may have a renal cause.
Who Is at Risk?
- Diabetics — the leading cause of CKD in India
- People with hypertension
- Those who take NSAIDs (ibuprofen, diclofenac) regularly
- Recurrent kidney stone sufferers
Protecting Your Kidneys
- Control blood sugar and blood pressure
- Stay well hydrated: 8–10 glasses of water daily
- Limit painkillers: Use paracetamol when possible
- Annual screening: A simple urine test and blood creatinine detect early disease before symptoms appear
