Why Preventive Screenings Matter for Women
Many conditions — including cervical cancer, breast cancer, osteoporosis, and PCOS — are far easier to treat when detected early through routine screening.
In Your 20s
- Pap smear: Begin at age 21, every 3 years if normal — detects precancerous cervical changes
- Thyroid function (TSH): Thyroid disorders are significantly more common in women
- Blood pressure and BMI: Establish your baseline
In Your 30s — The PCOS Decade
PCOS affects 1 in 5 Indian women of reproductive age. Signs include irregular periods, excess facial hair, weight gain around the abdomen, and difficulty conceiving. An ultrasound and hormonal panel can confirm the diagnosis.
In Your 40s
- Mammography: Annual from age 40 for early breast cancer detection
- Bone density scan (DEXA): If you have risk factors
- Cardiovascular risk assessment: Heart disease is the leading killer of women over 50
In Your 50s and Beyond
- Bone density scan: All women post-menopause — osteoporosis is silent until a fracture occurs
- Colorectal cancer screening: Colonoscopy from age 50
